The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council - a.k.a TVET Council Barbados – is pleased to once again recognize the support given by the Barbados Light and Power (BL&P) Company Limited towards the work of the Council and its programmes.

The Light & Power recently renewed its covenant agreement with the TVET Council (TVETC) which provides for sponsorship monies, valued at $3000 annually over a two-year period, that go toward helping to cover some of the costs of the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Progamme, in particular.

The BL&P’s covenant agreement with the TVET Council was first entered into in 2020.

During the recent cheque presentation, the BL&P’s Senior Engineering Manager Victor Callender said: “Light & Power is pleased to support the TVET Council again as it works with young people across several disciplines, helping them to develop, to be competitive and to be the best that they can be.

“I have personally taken interest in helping many with their skills in the area of electricity and electrical engineering. I am always gratified to see the outcome. More so, I’m happy to be a part of a company that actively supports the youth and their growth. Light & Power is in the forefront of investing in programmes, like WorldSkills Barbados, that shape professionals and prepare them for the world of work out there, at a local, regional and even, an international level.

This opportunity again is definitely a ‘win win’ for the young competitors, for the TVET Council, for Light & Power and best of all, for Barbados,” Mr. Callender stressed.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the TVET Council, Research Officer Sarah Gilkes-Daniel expressed gratitude to the Light & Power for the support it has given the TVETC through the years, both with the Technical Programme, under which National and Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (N/CVQs) are developed, as well as with the WorldSkills Barbados Programme which served a key purpose of helping to improve the quality of the national technical and vocational education and training (i.e. TVET) system.

“Both the N/CVQ programme and the WorldSkills programme have in common the use of occupational standards to benchmark the quality of education and training in Barbados and to ensure it meets world class criteria,” Mrs. Gilkes-Daniels said.

The WorldSkills Barbados Programme is managed by the TVET Council as part of its mandate to promote competence based TVET. It is part of the international WorldSkills Programme which highlights the link between skills excellence, professional development and national and global economic growth and prosperity through the promotion of vocational, technological, and service oriented education and training in 65 skill areas.

WorldSkills promotes skilled careers in its 85 member countries and regions, all working with youth, educators, governments and industries to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future.
