WorldSkills Barbados 2023 Competition: Hollyann wins Gold in Car Painting!

Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) student Hollyann Lampkin made history at the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) 2023 Competition by becoming the first female to win the male-dominated Car Painting skills competition.

Hollyann was one of 22 students who competed in the sixth, biennial WorldSkills Barbados Competition, which took place June 20-22 and 24-25, 2023. The closing/ awards ceremony took place on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre (LESC), Two Mile Hill, St. Michael.

The SJPI Vehicle Body Repair student took the gold medal with a score of 81% followed by silver medallist Shaquon Walthrust with a score of 77% and Shaquon Harewood who took the bronze with 74%.

The overall 'Best of Competition' winner for WSB 2023 was Barbados Community College (BCC) student Moriah Hill, who won the gold medal in Cooking with a score of 85%. Moriah also won the Trailblazer Award with 93%.

This award is presented to the competitor who scores the highest in the Competitors Developmental Programme (CDP), which develops their soft skills.

The final score for each competitor is a combination of the scores awarded by judges during the competition and the scores earned from the Competitors Development Programme prior to the competition.

Car Painting competitor Jonathan Walcott, SJPI, was awarded a Medallion for Excellence, which is presented to individuals who have attained the WorldSkills Barbados standard by scoring 70% or more but have not medalled.
