With less than two months to go, preparations for the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) 2023 Competition are well underway. On Friday, April 14th, 2023, orientation for competition finalists took place at the TVET Council Barbados’ Offices, Hastings, Christ Church.
This year, preliminaries for the competition were cancelled to give training institutions more time to prepare their prospective competitors and greater flexibility in their selection for the finals, which will take place in June. Following a selection process, the participating institutions each chose four of their best candidates to represent them in their respective skill areas.
Twenty-three (23) finalists representing Barbados Community College (BCC), Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI), Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB), and Caribbean Cuisine Culinary Institute (CCCI) will be competing in the four (4) skill areas: Automotive technology, Car Painting During, Cooking, Restaurant Service.
During the two-hour orientation session, competitors learned more about the WorldSkills Competition, as well as the expectations of technical experts, experience from past WorldSkills Barbados competitors and champions, and a presentation from the Barbados Employee Confederation (BEC) on the Competitor Developmental Programme (CDP).
As competitors continue to progress in their preparation, participation in the CDP is mandatory, as the emphasis of the WorldSkills Competition is not only on improving and honing occupational skills, but also on the development of the competitors' soft skills.
The WorldSkills Barbados 2023 competition is scheduled to take place from June 20th – 22nd and June 24th – 25th and will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre and Inchcape Barbados, respectively.
The biennial WSB Competition, which is based on the WorldSkills International Competition, was launched in 2012. Its purpose is to help improve the quality of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system by promoting skills development and excellence. The national competition is managed by the TVET Council (TVETC), Barbados.
