Aerial Robotics (i.e. Drone Operating) is one of the five skills being offered at the WSB Juniors Future Skills Camp.

The TVET Council (TVETC), through the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Programme, will host online an inaugural WorldSkills Barbados Juniors (WSBJ) Future Skills Camp from September 6 – 10, 2021.

The five-day camp is being held as an alternative to the second biennial WorldSkills Barbados Juniors Competition, aimed at secondary school students, which has been postponed this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first WSBJ Competition was held in November 2019.

Technical Officer with the TVET Council, Dario Walcott, who is the Lead Officer of the WorldSkills Barbados Programme, explained: “WorldSkills Russia reached out to us with regards to some partnership possibilities. They asked about our WSB Juniors Competition but we explained we weren’t hosting the competition this year because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. They proposed the option of a Future Skills Camp which they had previously held for WorldSkills Russia Juniors and we at WorldSkills Barbados felt that it was an opportunity to provide diversified training options for Barbados’ youth.”

He added: “This is one of the benefits of being part of the WorldSkills International community. Countries share resources and expertise and provide training opportunities for each other which helps to improve the quality of the global technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.”

Outlining the benefits of the Future Skills Camp, Mr. Walcott noted: “Participants will be exposed to new and exciting skills which are important to a digital future, they will gain insight into diverse career options and they will have the opportunity to meet and engage with other young people who have similar interests.”

The skills which will be offered at the inaugural camp include 3D Digital Game Art, Aerial Robotics, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Mobile Applications Development and Internet of Things.
