Alyssa-Amor Gibbons: BIM Certified Professional

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process supported by various tools within Building Information Management. This process allows architects, designers and construction professionals to create and manage information throughout the project lifecycle of a building.

This exciting skill incorporates cutting-edge technology, where technical 2D drawings can be transformed and reimagined into 3D. As explained by BIM Certified Professional, Alyssa-Amor Gibbons, “we are taking the building geometry, assigning parametric properties to windows, doors and walls, and hosting metadata within the model itself.”

But why is BIM so important?

As the world evolves, so does the value of these skills and the need for them in society. “I think it is important as well because the advantages that you have when you have that depth of information within a model is really game-changing.”

Ms. Gibbons further explained: “BIM is also important because of where we are at in the world. It is critical within the building environment industry and we can’t go much further without adopting it (BIM).

She continued: “I think in the construction industry, the perception is: You take a minimal amount of time to design the building but then production takes a really long time. BIM kind of flips that model on its head and you spend a lot of time front-loading the process, so you spend a high percentage of the time that you would expect to deliver a building, in designing.”

What types of jobs are available to me if I pursue a career in Building Information Modelling?

“The beauty of building information modelling and BIM management as a whole is that it has opened up an entire industry of technical skill and abilities,” Ms. Gibbons said.

With Building Information Modelling, you have the option of being a BIM Coordinator, a BIM Manager, an Architect, a Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Engineer, an Interior Designer and much more.

It is for this reason that the BIM Certified Professional believes: “Without a doubt, BIM is the way forward, there is no other way to survive in this industry without it”.
